Event Description: Filmmaker and environmental journalist Jared Flesher will premiere his new documentary film, The Farmer and the Horse, at Howell Living History Farm on Friday, August 6. The film will be projected in a picturesque farm field, under the stars, beginning at 9:00 p.m. The farm will open at 7:00 p.m. for farm tours, live music, and discussions with the filmmaker. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Admission is free, with donations accepted ($3 suggested). Flesher’s film tells the story of three young, sustainability-minded farmers in New Jersey who share a less-than-modern idea—maybe they’d be better off farming with draft horses instead of tractors. “When I started this, the story I intended to tell was fairly simple: a few farmers trying something unusual,” said Flesher. “Like most things, it turned out to be more complicated. The film is also about land use, agricultural history, and people trying to find meaning in the work they do. It seems they’re all connected." The screening is sponsored by the Friends of Howell Farm. This program is made possible in part by the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission through funding from the New Jersey Historical Commission-Department of State, and the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The rain date for the screening is August 20.
